Press Release: Immediate

The COSATU-affiliated Southern African Clothing and Textile Workers UNION (SACTWU) is appalled by the recent atrocious attacks on our Muslim community. We condemn statements made about burning down mosques, which were done by a Langebaan resident. We are also outraged and disgusted by the placement of a pigs snout at the entrance of a mosque in Simons Town. The most recent attack on the mosque in Kalkbay indicates an orchestrated campaign to deliberately disrupt the religious tolerance which we have experienced for centuries in Cape Town.

We appeal that these attacks do not go unpunished and that the Muslim community are kept safe and respected.

We call on the Christian community to make their voiced heard loud and clear, and to condemn these deliberate provocative actions  to destabilise our communities along religious lines. We will resist all attempts at such racist division.

We call on the police to do whatever they can to arrest these criminals. They must rot in jail.

Many of our members and families come from the Muslim community and we respect their views and beliefs. We will do everything in our power to ensure that they and the broader community are respected and protected, as our countrys constitution requires.

We call on all political parties to immediately and urgently condemn this cowardice.
