PRESS RELEASE:IMMEDIATE

The COSATU-affiliated Southern African Clothing & Textile Workers’ Union (SACTWU) mourns the passing of His Excellency, Nelson Rolihlala Mandela.

We will remember and celebrate his life for many reasons, especially his iconic role in our struggle for freedom and liberation. For now, we wish to pause and briefly appreciate the following additional significant moments for our trade union:

Firstly, not many people know this: SACTWU was the first trade union visited by Madiba following his release from prison. We remain humbled by this honour.

Secondly, Madiba personally intervened in a very determined manner in the WTO trade agreement negotiations in the mid 1990’s, to undo a deal which would have completely decimated our domestic clothing, textile and leather industries. We will remain forever grateful for this intervention and his unwavering commitment to maintain our country’s industrial manufacturing capacity.

Thirdly, Nelson Mandela has elevated African fashion to global status, such as with his very famous and  elegant “Madiba shirt” and other clothing ranges. He is a fashion icon.

We salute the passing of our great leader and extend our deepest condolences to the Mandela family, to the South Africa nation as a whole and to the many compatriots around the world who share in his vision of a better life for all.

Hamble Kahle Madiba.
