MEDIA RELEASE: IMMEDIATE

The COSATU-affiliated Southern African Clothing & Textile Workers’ Union (SACTWU) will commence a series of Matric Winter Schools on Monday. These schools are part of the union’s social responsibility programme, and aims to assist working class matriculant children with extra lessons in some of the more difficult subjects, to help them prepare for successful matric year-end exams.

Our Winter Schools have been run nationally every year since its launch in the year 2000, except in 2007 when a national wage strike took place by educators in our country. It typically lasts between 5 and 9 days.

This year, the SACTWU Matric Winter Schools will take place in Cape Town, Port Elizabeth, East London, Ladysmith, Newcastle and Durban. A total of 1054 matriculants are expected to attend, 81 more than the 973 who attended our winter schools last year.

Our Winter schools are fully funded by SACTWU and all its logistical set up is internally arranged and self-managed by current SACTWU staff and shop stewards. The unionhas  budgeted R1.7 million for this year’s program.

We cover the fees for educators, daily meal- and transport allowances for learners, and all the costs associated with learning materials and stationary.
Training is in the form of tutoring opposed to classroom styled teaching.

Each participant is also issued with a long sleeve locally manufactured winter t-shirt, specifically custom designed as memorabilia for our Winter School participants.

We work in close collaboration with local schools and qualified local educators who are specialists in their subject areas and who have experience as external matric level examiners.

Subjects to be covered this year includes English, mathematics, maths literacy, physics, life sciences and accounting. In addition, participants receive career guidance counselling.

The media is invited to cover the Winter Schools, and details of venues can be received from Hazel Jacobs (contact details below).
