SACTWU members on strike at Day Break Farm in Mpumalanga
On 2 December 2019, the COSATU- affiliated Southern African Clothing and Textile Workers’ Union (SACTWU) commenced a protected strike at Day Break Poultry Farm in Delmas in Mpumalanga. Our members are on strike for wage increases and annual bonuses.
Before commencing with the strike, on 28 November 2019, SACTWU conducted a strike ballot, obtaining permission from members to proceed with strike action. Over 80% of the workers voted in favour of the strike.
At 6am yesterday an estimate of 450 workers downed tools and are now fighting for their wage increase.
The workers are demanding a 14% wage increase, but the employer is offering 9% . Another matter that the workers are fighting for is a 13th cheque.
Negotiations started in September and after three rounds, negotiations were deadlocked. The matter then went to conciliation and still no consensus were reached.
Wages at this company are very low, averaging R700 per week, paid fortnightly.
We will support our members and will continue to fight for better rights for all workers.
